My mother didn’t have the same privileges that my brother and I were accustomed to growing up, but she did have my Nana. My grandmother made sure that all seven of her children were clothed, fed, and educated. My mother always says that my Nana could not only turn lemons into lemonade, but she also planted the seeds that turned into lemon trees in her own backyard. She was the Martha Stewart of Westbury. When my father settled our little family into the town of Bay Shore on Long Island, New York, my mother was opened to a whole new world of suburban housewives. These women thrived on carpooling, going to PTA meetings, and helping their Girl Scout leaders have the best group of girls in the system. Cooking was a totally different story than what my Nana had provided. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/growing-up-on-30-minute-meals-with-rachael-ray-in-the-suburbs-the-30-minute-meal/

Of all the appliances (large or small) in your kitchen, the microwave tends to have the shortest lifespan — around nine years or so. The good news? The new ones on the market are relatively inexpensive and you can get a decent one for less than $100. How will you know if it’s time to get a new one? Look for any of these five signs. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/5-signs-you-need-to-replace-your-microwave-the-smart-appliance-shopper/ I didn’t use recipes growing up. My mom (the original Iron Chef) just taught me by example. A pinch of this, cook that until it smells right, take it out of the oven when the edges turn golden — you know the type. Let’s just say we didn’t own any measuring cups and nothing ever tasted exactly the same way twice. Which is why the most important thing I learned about cooking after having a baby was a total shock to my system. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/the-one-thing-i-learned-about-cooking-after-i-had-a-baby-youre-a-parent-now/ Buying a freshly baked loaf of bread is a thing of beauty — especially when it’s still warm. But unless you’re incredibly hungry or have a bunch of guests over, it’s doubtful that you’ll finish the whole thing. So where do you store the bread? Do you put it straight into the freezer? Do you keep it out on the counter? Do you shove it into your pantry? Truth be told, it’s not the easiest thing to store in the kitchen. If your family is obsessed with all things bread, then it might be time to invest in a bread box. I’m pretty keen on this vintage-inspired one on Amazon that you can currently buy for $45. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/keep-your-kitchen-clean-organized-with-this-bread-box-amazon-kitchen-deal-of-the-day/ When we hear the words “pot roast,” many of us think of the Sunday classic — a hunk of braised beef swimming in gravy and surrounded by tender vegetables — but “pot roast” is also a verb. To pot roast something promises that meat is browned and then braised with a long slow, cook until tender. Many cultures have their own distinct pot roasts with ingredients ranging from lamb to green olives to prunes. While ingredients vary, there are many techniques from these regional pot roasts that we can apply to our own pot roast at home. Here are my four favorite pot roasts from around the world and the tips they teach us about making better pot roast at home. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/5-tips-from-around-the-world-for-making-a-better-pot-roast-meat-market/ From Apartment Therapy → How to Remove Labels From Jars (and Turn Jars Into Glassware) via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/a-guide-to-removing-labels-from-jars-and-turning-them-into-glassware-apartment-therapy/ The beaches are beautiful, yes. And the palm trees are idyllic, for sure. But hands-down, the best thing about Miami is its diversity, and I mean that in two different ways. The first is the diversity of its people. From Cuba to South America to Israel to Europe, a melting pot of cultures and nationalities gives the sunny city its wonderful international flavor. It can be heard in the mix of languages, felt in the music, and tasted in the cuisine. Miami is a city with so many stories to tell because it tells all of the stories of those who live here and the rich histories of where they come from. The other is Miami’s ability to be all things at once. The way you can still feel the 1950s sensations of The Rat Pack as you drive up and down Collins Avenue past the Eden Roc and Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Or how the Art Deco buildings and neon palette of Ocean Drive can still conjure Miami Vice in the ’80s. Or how the explosion of art and design over the last few years has breathed new life into the city and propelled it into the future. It’s a coastal resort town and an urban metropolis; a premier sailing destination and one of the largest cruise ship ports in the world; a gateway to other countries and considered by locals to be its own. It’s where the rich and famous come to play, where beach bodies come to tan, and, hopefully after reading this Bite-Sized Guide, it’s where you’ll come to explore all the wonderful and varied offerings that Miami has in store. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/a-food-minded-guide-to-everything-delicious-about-miami-bite-sized-guide-miami/ Never has it tasted to good to be straddled between winter and spring until now. Fresh stalks of asparagus mingle with a healthy dose of lemon and thyme to hint at spring’s arrival, while this vegetarian supper is anchored with a favorite winter staple. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/recipe-spaghetti-squash-with-asparagus-ricotta-lemon-and-thyme-recipes-from-the-kitchn/ This curried cauliflower sweet potato soup is really easy to make in under 30 minutes, is budget-friendly and full of beautiful flavours like coconut and lime. It’s also great to make ahead of time as the flavours only improve after a day or two after it’s made. It’s thick, rich, filling and totally bowl-licking worthy….
