A report from the World Wildlife Fund has found that the world marine vertebrate population has been cut in half since the 1970s. In addition to that, commercial fishes like tuna and mackerel have declined by about 75 percent.
In 2006, a few researchers predicted that all seafood stock globally will be gone by the year 2050. This may be one of the inconvenient truths, but the fish stocks are declining worldwide at a fast rate. Read more in this report by Clare Leschin-Hoar on NPR:
Fish Stocks Are Declining Worldwide, And Climate Change Is On The Hook
For anyone paying attention, it’s no secret there’s a lot of weird stuff going on in the oceans right now. We’ve got a monster El Nino looming in the Pacific. Ocean acidification is prompting hand wringing among oyster lovers. Migrating fish populations have caused tensions between countries over fishing rights. And fishermen say they’re seeing unusual patterns in fish stocks they haven’t seen before. Read more…
At present, estimates from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization reports that about 70 percent of the total fishes worldwide is either consumed or overfished, which may be the two main causes of the decline. Another cause is the climate change – still the effect of human actions.
So if fish stocks are declining worldwide because of these things, it’s a no-brainer that we have to at least participate in controlling the decline. For instance, fishermen should limit their catch per day, and make sure the techniques they use will not damage the other species, as well as their homes.
As for consumers, one can help by consuming less fish per week, and informing friends and family members about this global problem. Just imagine a life without fishes, or how your future grandchildren may not be able to taste them. Imagine these creatures will be gone the same way as dinosaurs left the earth. Scary, huh?
