During my annual purge of our filing cabinet, I was thrilled to find an envelope of receipts labeled “Whole30.” Last January, I — along with five other Kitchn editors — gave this popular diet a try. At the time, the cost of buying “Whole30-compliant” food flabbergasted me and left me with lots of big feelings about my own grocery habits. A year later, and with a 2018 New Year’s goal to master my grocery budget, looking through those year-old receipts taught me a lot about food spending, the cost of healthy-ish eating, and how I can improve my non-Whole30 budget moving forward. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/what-doing-whole30-taught-me-about-my-grocery-budget-shopping/

Over the years, I’ve adopted a few habits that make grocery shopping easier or, dare I say, more fun — even with two kids in tow. Some of this advice is tried and true whether you really want to make grocery shopping happier or just plain faster, while other tips will make your big-haul or pantry-stocking trips more enjoyable. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/10-tips-for-a-happier-trip-to-the-grocery-store-meal-planning-club/ No matter how much you love the taste of garlic, we’re betting you probably don’t love the lingering smell it leaves on your fingers. (If you do, you should keep reading anyway…) We’re also betting you’ve seen those fun stainless-steel soaps that use science to wash the smell away. You have, right? But have you ever seen a stainless-steel soap in the shape of a fish!? via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/if-you-love-garlic-you-need-this-in-your-kitchen-amazon-deal-of-the-day/ We’ve heard a lot of haters complain that Joanna Gaines (the decorator half of Fixer Upper, HGTV’s hit home renovation show based in Waco, Texas) makes every kitchen look the same. While she does have a very specific farmhouse style — with lots of white, shiplap, and oversized clocks — she also has plenty of range and great ideas. Don’t believe us? Besides subjecting my taste buds to way too many different things, I also noticed an interesting trend in packaging that I hadn’t seen much before. Can you guess what it is? via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/the-label-youre-about-to-start-seeing-on-packaging-all-over-the-place-winter-fancy-food-show-2018/ Making your own granola bars allows for superior snacking. You can easily customize the size of your bars and the many ways to flavor them, but it can be a little tricky to obtain a perfect texture. If you’re on Team Chewy Granola Bar, there’s one ingredient that can help you in your snacking quest. Do you use it? via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/this-ingredient-is-the-secret-to-chewy-granola-bars-tips-from-the-kitchn/ A few months ago, I lamented here that I haven’t been able to find a winning broom-and-dust-pan combo. To recap: I sweep my floors (almost!) every night, a total necessity with two kids, one of whom is a messy 3-year-old who seems to scatter bits of rice and kale chips in her wake. (Hey, at least she likes kale chips.) And no matter what I tried, I could never seem to get every last crumb off my floor when I swept. My workaround was to sweep, then use a hand vacuum to pick up the remaining bits. Not the end of the world, but still kinda annoying! When I asked for your solutions, I heard much of the same — other workarounds, including using sturdy junk mail instead of a dust pan, using a rubber-bristled broom, and a brand I hadn’t heard of yet, called Wisp (although even these fixes had their pros and cons). via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/we-finally-found-a-broom-and-dust-pan-combo-that-actually-works-shopping/ We have a trick from Julia Child that will completely change the way you poach eggs. And by “change,” I mean be prepared to make flawless poached eggs for the rest of your life. No exaggeration! Even if you have a tried-and-true method, making poached eggs can be tricky. I’ve made more than my fair share, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I make a darn good poached egg. So, it takes a lot for me to be wowed by tips in this department. Although, I suppose if there was anyone capable of that, it was bound to be Julia Child. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/26/julia-childs-simple-trick-for-perfect-poached-eggs-every-time-tips-from-the-kitchn/ Any of you who have ever thrown a party at home (or attended one at someone else’s home!) know that people are drawn to gathering in the kitchen. It’s the same for other things, too — mail, pizza boxes, your partner’s dirty dishes, etc. For this reason, the kitchen is the one space that is most in need of a rigid plan to keep it clutter-free around the clock. So here’s a little tough love, in three easy-to-follow rules. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2018/01/25/3-simple-hard-and-fast-rules-to-follow-if-you-want-a-neater-clutter-free-kitchen-at-all-times-cleaning-tips-from-kitchn/ |
