Although I’ve made this bistro favorite the classic, Julia-inspired way, now that I know how to make it in the slow cooker, I’m probably never going back to stovetop! Here’s a step-by-step recipe for blissfully delicious French onion soup made from start to finish in the slow cooker. Well, right up until the cheesy toast. You still need the oven for that, but with soup this easy, what’s a little broiling at the end? via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/how-to-make-french-onion-soup-in-the-slow-cooker-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn/

I recently got married. As we’ve joined our finances and embraced the sexy task of co-budgeting, I’ve been shocked — shocked! — by our combined food bill, which has at times spiked above $1000 a month. So I’ve recommitted to cooking as a way to save money, rather than squander it. And one of the most reliable tools I have to do that is my slow cooker. Here are eight ways it helps me save money. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/8-ways-the-slow-cooker-helps-me-save-money-kitchn-slow-cooker/ Trick-or-treating is an experience many children see as the best part of Halloween. The only thing better than birthday presents is free candy, face painting, and pretending you’re someone else for a few hours. Unfortunately for the residents of Bathurst, New Brunswick, it’s not always seen as such a glorious activity. The town is stopping anyone 16 or older from trick-or-treating, and is also making a curfew for tiny tots. Oh, and did I mention that failure to comply with these new rules comes with financial penalty? Um, yeah. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/this-town-wants-to-impose-a-200-fine-for-trick-or-treaters-food-news/ This creamy coconut curried stew is a perennial favorite in my house. It’s full of tender vegetables and chickpeas, along with the warming flavors of ginger and garlic — and it’s vegan! Yes, a batch of this stew makes it worth pulling out the slow cooker and clearing some space on the counter. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/slow-cooker-recipe-curried-vegetable-and-chickpea-stew-quick-and-easy-vegetarian-dinners/ As someone who could spend an eternity ogling produce, I frequently find myself entranced by, say, those artful tumbles of tomatillos at Whole Foods. As someone who has spent an eternity covering the beauty industry, I just as often find myself in the stores’ Whole Body aisles. There — among the soaps, scrubs, and salves — I sniff a ridiculous amount of product. (The way to a beauty editor’s heart is through her nose, I’m pretty sure.) p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 19.0px ‘Times New Roman’; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} Of course, no matter how great a product smells, it has to work, too. And once you apply both criteria, clear must-haves start to emerge. Yes, this list is totally subjective and ever-changing — because who knows what’s going to hit shelves tomorrow? For now, however, here’s the number-one thing I’m obsessed with. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/the-best-non-food-thing-to-buy-at-whole-foods-shopping/ All that chopping, cutting, slicing, and dicing that goes into making a delicious meal can be enough to send you running for the pre-cut products at the grocery store. (After all, you can open a plastic package so much faster than you can dice an onion, right?) Of course, that stuff is often more expensive and it takes something away from the cooking process. One way to embrace the prep is to buy cutting boards you actually like using. You know, to replace that worn-out, knife-marred thing you’ve had for years. Which brings us to this Sabatier set. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/upgrade-your-cutting-boards-with-this-set-on-sale-now-amazon-deal-of-the-day/ If you are as excited about the imminent return of citrus season as I am, you’re going to want to stock up and keep these bright smoothie packs on repeat for as long as possible. Sweet orange segments are paired with tropical mango for a big punch of vitamin C, plus banana for a cool, creamy finish. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/make-ahead-smoothie-packs-mango-orange-smoothie-make-ahead-smoothie-kits/ From Apartment Therapy → Quality Finds: 10 Crowd-Approved “Buy it for Life” Kitchen Essentials via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/10-crowd-approved-buy-it-for-life-kitchen-essentials-apartment-therapy/ If you’re not sold on Brussels sprouts, it’s probably because you haven’t had them prepared the right way. These crispy panko-coated sprouts are far from the mushy, bland ones you used to push around on your dinner plate while your mom watched from across the table. These Brussels sprouts are so crunchy and flavorful I guarantee you won’t be able to stop eating them once you start. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/this-is-how-you-make-brussels-sprouts-irresistibly-good-delicious-links/ With a European small-town feel and menus peppered with French-Canadian classics like meat pie and poutine in their finest forms, Quebec City is a bit like Provence on a derailed diet. Spending a weekend here will fill you up on great food, litter your Instagram with enviable photos, and leave your hands just a little bit sticky with maple syrup. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/09/27/a-food-lovers-guide-to-quebec-city-fall-weekend-trips/ |
