Zoodles, swoodles, and other noodle-fied vegetables are pretty trendy these days. And for good reason! Not just a clever name, spiralized vegetables are a healthier alternative to noodles and just a fun new way to eat more veggies. Sure, you can turn produce into noodles with a chef’s knife or a julienne peeler, but that will take some time — so it does help to have a spiralizer. Which one should you get? We put three different gadgets through the wringer and here’s what we thought. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/29/we-tried-3-spiralizers-and-heres-what-we-thought-its-a-spiralized-life-2/

Do you remember when it was like $10 tops to see a movie? I’m talking ticket, popcorn, and parking meter included. Okay, we didn’t have to pay the meter in the sleepy southern California suburb where my mom and dad let me go to movies with friends alone from the tender age of 11, but you know what I mean. It cost a lot of money to drive downtown to go see a Broadway touring company perform a matinee, but seeing a 10 a.m. showing of the latest Disney cartoon? That was cheap. Those were the good old days, right? Now you practically need a black card just to approach the ticket desk at your local movie theater. Sometimes there are deals on early morning or weeknight movies, but rarely on the concessions. And seeing a movie without something to snack on just isn’t a fun time for me. Plus, let’s be honest here — movie theater snacks aren’t exactly known for being health-conscious. That’s why I always bring my favorite healthy snack into any movie I see. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/29/the-one-healthy-snack-i-always-sneak-into-movie-theaters-healthy-snacks/ In the past, my attitude toward meal kits might best be described as one of superior acceptance. As in: Meal kits? They’re great! For other people. I truly believed that whatever got people cooking was a step in the right direction. I just wasn’t interested in trying meal kits for myself. I was wary of the quality of the ingredients and of the quantity of waste — in the form of cardboard boxes, plastic bags, and ice packs. I also didn’t believe the recipes could be all that good. Surely I could do better on my own? And then the Great Cooking Rut of 2017 hit. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/29/the-meal-kit-delivery-service-that-got-me-back-into-the-kitchen-meal-kit-magic/ From Apartment Therapy → Here’s Exactly How Much Whole Foods Dropped Its Prices Today via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/this-is-exactly-how-much-whole-foods-dropped-its-prices-today-apartment-therapy/ window.ATGalleries = window.ATGalleries || {}; For a special summer dinner or just a random Wednesday night, there’s nothing better than steaks on the grill. But while your beef might be the main attraction, you can’t live on steak alone. With that in mind, we have plenty of ideas for delicious summer sides that will complement that perfectly browned and charred T-bone, rib-eye, or Porterhouse. You can give the classic potato side a salt-and-vinegar update, or add a cool, crunchy slaw to keep things light. And if you need a refresher, here’s how we grill the perfect steak. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/27-side-dishes-that-go-great-with-grilled-steak-recipes-from-the-kitchn-2/ The sweet-savory flavors of Korean barbecued meats lure me in every time — especially when served alongside a big bowl of fluffy rice. The combination of honey, soy sauce, and sesame transforms affordable flank steak into a dish that rivals the one at your favorite Korean restaurant. Here’s how to skip the grilling and make a delicious one-pan bulgogi-style beef rice bowl on a busy weeknight, complete with broccoli so that you don’t have to make an extra side dish or vegetable. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/recipe-korean-style-beef-and-broccoli-bowl-recipes-from-the-kitchn-2/ window.ATGalleries = window.ATGalleries || {}; I think we can all agree that no matter how you slice it, Mondays are tough. That’s why earlier this year I followed Associate Editor Meghan’s lead for reserving Monday night for slow cooker dinners. You guys, it’s a game-changer! Having a night of nearly hands-off cooking helps me ease back into the week. Whether I want a recipe that leaves me with heaps of leftovers or I’m craving comfort food or something on the healthier side, there’s a recipe that fits the bill. Here are 10 of my favorite Monday night slow cooker recipes. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/10-hearty-weekday-friendly-slow-cooker-recipes-recipes-from-the-kitchn/ window.ATGalleries = window.ATGalleries || {}; Ah, the ubiquitous frozen chicken breast — how we love you! Chances are high you’ve got some hanging out in your freezer right now for future use — you know, for that rushed Wednesday night when you forget to thaw anything and need dinner in the next hour. What’s that, you say? No way to thaw and cook chicken breast in under an hour? Here’s the surprising thing about frozen chicken breast: You can take it straight from the freezer to the oven and cook it up in under and hour. Not only is it safe, but this time-saver can also be tasty with a splash of olive oil and protective crumb coating. Your Wednesday night dinner rush is about to be saved. via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/how-to-cook-chicken-breast-from-frozen-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn/ It’s that awkward time of year again, when it’s still technically summer for another three weeks (and the weather agrees!), but brands are already releasing their pumpkin spice products. Every year Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte comes out just a little bit earlier. Last year it was September 6, and this year I heard it might be hitting coffee shops as early as this week. Can you tell I’m a little salty about this? I just want to enjoy the remaining weeks of summer while I can! I don’t want to think about flannel and boots and big bulky coats that will hang in my closet for another few months. But nonetheless pumpkin spice season is upon us, and there are a handful of products that justify this flavor trend being around for another year. Have you tried one of these? via WordPress https://jonathanwilhoite.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/10-products-that-justify-pumpkin-spices-continued-existence-on-trend/ |
